Robert Speer moved from Pennsylvania to Colorado at age 23 seeking a cure for tuberculosis. His first job in Denver was at the Daniels and Fisher department store, which he left to start a real estate business. His career in public life began with election as City Clerk. He was later postmaster before his election as mayor in 1904. His time as mayor was marked by growth and civic improvements including better roads, city and mountain parks, and the construction of the Municipal Auditorium and City Park Zoo.
