Preface:The inspiration for Children's Clothing: Designing, Selecting Fabrics, Patternmaking, Sewing came from my students in the children's wear major classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I have tried to outline for the novice designer, as well as for the more advanced designer, many of the basic concepts used in children's wear design, patternmaking, and garment construction. This book will introduce a system of designing, patternmaking, and sewing that has been used for years by the garment industry.The book is divided into five units. The first unit deals with how to go about planning the design, selecting slopers and fabrics, and laying out your pattern in fabric. Sketches throughout the book should help to stimulate your imagination in planning the design. The second unit will explain how to properly fit the garment to your child. Unit Three shows you how to make the slopers you will need to execute your designs. You will learn-step-by-step-exactly how to use the slopers to make the paper patterns for your own designs. The fourth unit of the book is devoted to sewing individual parts of the garment as well as sewing the garments together. Here is where you will learn how to turn out really profes-sional-looking clothes. All the sewing techniques you'll need to construct a successful garment are included-from sewing seams to making pretty pinafores with ruffles. Unit Five will discuss any additional trimmings or details needed to finish your garment. Making children's clothing is an exciting way to express your creativity and the benefits are many. As a professional designer, there is almost always work in the children's wear industry. Parents will always need to buy clothing for growing children.
