Economic Restructuring in the Former Soviet Bloc: The Case of Housing

Housing and housing finance reform are two of the fundamental building blocks for creating a viable market-oriented economy out of a former socialist system. This book reviews and assesses--individually and in comparative perspective--market-oriented housing sector reforms in nine countries. These include Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Estonia, and Russia. For each country, experts lay out the basic housing situation, housing production, housing finance and home ownership subsidies, rental housing (particularly privatization efforts), and likely future developments.
