The Making of a Modern Greek Identity: Education, Nationalism, and the Teaching of a Greek National Past (East European Monographs)

In 1832 Greece was recognized as an independent nation-state. In the years that followed an understanding of what it meant to be Greek was taught in the Greek schools.  This book explores the ways in which the teaching of Greek history helped shape a modern Greek national identity. After the formation of a Greek national school system and universal education in Greece an idealized Greek identity that traced its roots to ancient Greece was taught to first generation Greek students.
