Chinese Breakthrough: Learning Chinese through TV and Newspapers (Textbook)

This audio-visual program is designed to allow high-intermediate level students of Chinese to "break through" the initial frustrations and seeming incomprehensibility of Mandarin TV news programs and allow them to increase their comprehension and enjoyment of this important form of mass communication. Based on authentic journalistic Chinese and supported by extensive examples and exercises, this course is appropriate for high school, college, or adult learners in government, business, journalism, and education. Chinese Breakthrough consists of 15 lessons divided into four units: Daily News and Current Affairs, Business and Economic News, Cultural Affairs, and Sports. Lesson content is based on authentic Mainland China television news broadcasts, available on the accompanying video cassette. The audio cassettes provide a separate listening component to the textbook and contain the introduction, vocabulary list, short dialogues, and questions in the textbook. The workbook contains exercises for listening comprehension, language practice, and discussion specifically related to the video broadcasts.
