Transposition and substitution systems are discussed on a general higher level. Attention is likewise devoted to combined substitution and transposition methods. Cryptographs and their limitations are described. Code systems are treated with emphasis on enciphered code systems. A section of the text is devoted to cipher machines, with discussion as to their importance, types of machines, and advantages and disadvantages of cipher machines.
