Albert Schweitzer's Lambarene

A history of the hospital founded in Gabon, Africa in 1913, by the great humanitarian Albert Schweitzer and his wife, Helene Schweitzer-Bresslau, by Jo and Walter Munz, who were associated with the hospital for over 40 years. Abundantly illustrated and encompassing diverse voices from the Schweitzer world on three continents, this translation of Jo and Walter Munz's popular book (originally written in German and later translated into French) brings the story of the Schweitzer Hospital to English-speaking readers in unprecedented detail. The translator, Patti M. Marxsen, entered the Schweitzer world through her decade-long association with the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti, which included service as secretary of the North American Alumni Association (1998-2006). As a professional writer and editor she has managed numerous projects for non-profit organizations in New England, including multi-author book development for the Boston Research Center for the 21st Century. Her writing has appeared in The Caribbean Writer, The French Review, Prairie Schooner, Fourth Genre, The Women's Review of Books, the International Herald Tribune, and the Journal of Haitian Studies, among others. Marxsen's Island Journeys: Exploring the Legacy of France, was published by Alondra Press in 2008, and includes an essay on Lambarene. The present volume is her first full-length book translation.
