Nascimento explodes the myth of a "racial democracy" in Brazil. The author who died in 2011 was a major figure in Afro-Brazilian arts, politics and scholarship, and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee. He founded the Black Experimental Theatre in Rio de Janeiro in 1944. He created the Institute for Research and Studies Afro Brazilian (Ipeafro) in 1981 to continue his fight for the rights of black people, especially in the areas of education and the culture. He was also a congressman, senator and secretary of Defense and Promotion of Afro-Brazilian Populations of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
