Fragments: My Path Through the 20th Century

Philanthropist, poet, race horse breeder, collector of contemporary art, and nationally infamous homeless activist ... these have been a few of Kit Tremaine's lives. Tremaine grew up in New Orleans to be a great beauty and Queen of Mardi Gras. But there was always another side to Tremaine, a side that donated time and money to so many liberal causes that her conservative friends called her a communist. She has given millions of dollars to a multitude of social projects. She has been instrumental in providing legal, medical, and counseling services for the poor, as well as founding and funding The Sunflower Foundation. In 1986 she appeared in Time magaizne after joining homeless activists in a successful drive to soften a Santa Barbara ordinance that criminalized sleep in public places.
