Description
Material-culture historian JOHN FITZHUGH MILLAR, who was educated at Harvard, the College of William & Mary, and in England, has several books to his credit on architectural history, colonial ships, and historic dance. He is well known for having been responsible for building full-sized operational copies of two Revolutionary War ships for the Bicentennial, the 24-gun frigate Rose now at San Diego, and the 12-gun sloop Providence (first ship of the American Navy, first to land the Marines, and first command of John Paul Jones). He runs the historic bed & breakfast “Newport House” (a reproduction of a 1756 house designed by Harrison at Newport that was destroyed in 1956) in Williamsburg, Virginia – see www.newporthousebb.com. His other book on Harrison is The Buildings of Peter Harrison: Cataloguing the Work of the First Global Architect, 1716-1775, McFarland & Co, 2014.
