Published on the occasion of The Drawing Center's exhibition, Dorothea Tanning: Early Designs for the Stage, this volume presents the hand-drawn ballet costume designs that Dorothea Tanning (b. 1910) created in collaboration with the early modernist choreographer George Balanchine. Dating from 1945-1953, the designs are showcased together for the first time, accompanied by archival photographs and ephemera related to the staged productions. The images explore the intersections of dance, performance, visual art, and costume, while drawing important parallels to Tanning's early discoveries in both painting and sculpture. The volume, number 91 in the Drawing Papers series, features an introduction by exhibition curators Joanna Kleinberg and Rachel Liebowitz, an essay by noted dance critic Robert Greskovic, and over 20 color plates.
