Taken from Foreword: Theodore Burr gates led a most interesting, full and diverse life. He was one of the numerous volunteers who emerged from the private sector to become a consummate army officer during the Civil War. His courage, leadership and skill on the battlefield are undeniable, and his indomitable devotion to God and country are unquestionable. After General Gates' death, his diaries and presentation sword were handed down to Clara Gates Elting, his last child by his first marriage. When Clara dies in 926, these war memorabilia were passed along to her daughter May.
