Description
The Curious History of the Bulb Vase studies the extensive range of bulb vases that appeared in Britain from the mid-18th century to date. Not only did they capture the imagination of Victorians, the sheer amount that were produced is staggering. Much of the credit for their success can be placed at the feet of George Piercy Tye, a Birmingham industrialist who designed and produced the most innovative glass bulb vases. While interest in bulb vases trailed off in the early part of the 20th century, it is now showing something of a revival. Modern vases, such as those designed by Dartington Crystal and Margaret Howdle, demonstrate that the art and interest in this craft is as high as ever. 750 photos and illustrations, showing early drawings and manuscripts, Victorian pattern books, early and modern day bulb vases, as well as bulb vases used for floral arrangements. The chapter "Follies & Oddities" will be of particular interest with Victorian experiments on bulbs and vases that are not always easy to replicate.
