Three Way Street

The 1960’s was a Post-War peaceful decade of Pyschedelia, Op Art, Mini-Skirts, The Beatles - and the widely publicised Sex Scandal of Government Minister, Lord Profumo. These events all coincided in over a 15 year duration of peace from the end of the 2nd World War in 1945, when both Covert Services of the U.S and the USSR were relatively inactive. Furthermore, the natural spread of ‘flower-power’ also contrasted with the eruption of Space exploration, where each Major Power sunk to new ruthless depths to claim the First Manned Lunar Landing, immediately re-triggering both these Services. As a result, Operatives abroad now faced the stark and startling prospect of shifting loyalties and friendships, both within their own ranks and on opposing sides. You see, with over 15 years of assimilation, their families had shared BOTH side’s Anniversaries, Weddings, Birthdays, Christenings, Parties and Socials, in fact there was very little else, BUT SUDDENLY YOU NO LONGER KNEW WHO WERE YOUR FRIENDS - AND WHO WERE NOT ! * * * * * AS THE AUTHOR . . . I would claim this is an ‘ Edge-of-the-Seat Read ’ - but as in the related Profumo Affair to the Stephen Ward Call-Girl trial, you might agree with Mandy Rice-Davies’ passing shot-across-the-bows at Lord Astor haughtily denying all knowledge . . . . “ Well He Would, Wouldn’t He ! ” Here is the story of Max, one such senior Operative.
