A comprehensive collection of thought-provoking and heart-felt articles exploring the relationship between Christianity and animal welfare. Whether you are an animal welfarist who is looking into the Christian faith; or a Christian who feels alone in a church which lacks the determination to say or do anything positive against animal cruelty; or neither of these but someone who is simply looking to gain a better understanding; the reading of this book will be a truly rewarding, meaningful and life-changing experience.
"If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men." (St Francis of Assisi)
Animal Christian Concern (ACC), pronounced 'Assisi' in honour of St Francis, was born out of dismay at humanity's cruel exploitation of animals, and a need for a Christian animal welfare voice.
The few who gathered together in 1985 little realised that a year later they would be among 700 attending an ACC Service at York Minster, where the Bishop of Salisbury preached:-
"To shut your mind, heart, imagination to the sufferings of others is to begin slowly, but inexorably, to die. Those Christians who close their minds and hearts to the cause of animal welfare, and the evils it seeks to combat, are ignoring the fundamental spiritual teachings of Christ Himself."
These articles aim to express, inside and outside the Church, the view that cruelty of any kind is incompatible with Christ's teachings of love, that love is indivisible, and that cruelty towards any sentient creature is a breach of love.
