For thirty years the law-abiding people of Northern Ireland have stood behind the forces of law and order in their resolve to bring terrorism to an end, Their determination has been seriously weakened, however, by the growing realisation that the British Government was not doing all it might to defeat the loyalist and republican paramilitaries – was prepared instead to settle for what one MP called “an acceptable level of violence.” Every terrorist atrocity – even bombs in the City of London – is met with words of condemnation, a promise of tighter security – and little else. But when recently retired Chief Superintendent Austin Scott, his wife and four-months old grandson, are blown to bits in an IRA ambush on the Irish border, a small group of men decide enough is enough. The four, drawn from widely different backgrounds, launch an audacious plan, aimed at punishing the guilty – and ending the Irish “troubles” once and for all.
