Most of the contributions to this volume on tourism arose originally from papers which were presented at the Second Biennial International Conference of the Borneo Research Council held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from 13-17 July, 1992. Prior to this meeting various members of staff in the Centre for South-East Asian Studies at the University of Hull had already initiated a collaborative research programme on tourism development in South-East Asia, concentrating particularly on the ASEAN countries of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. One element of this research had been the organization in Hull in March 1991 of an international conference on tourism in South-East Asia under the auspices of the Association of South-East Asian Studies in the United Kingdom.
