Before, in between, and after each life, a Spirit named Chip will explain the significance of the individuals Chip became in three embodiments on earth.

Chip explains this by sending an e-mail to “the Alchemist,” a video game designer, at the start of the story. At the very end of the novel, an unexpected fact about the Alchemist's identity is revealed.
