This is a big book, with lots of characters and stories. In a way, its a little bit like War and Peace - only it's probably easier to read. But it's terrain may be as rocky and unfamiliar as nineteenth century Russia and France...and the characters inhabiting the landscape as complex in their own subtle and human ways as any character in any book. Also, this is a book about a religious society. It might prove useful to know something about the ground rules that affected them. Another thing, this book is the first in a series, and many of the ideas and characters will carry over into future offerings. These stories take place in one day, the first day of the new year - 73 B.C. Expect to spend some quality time looking into their lives, and to make some friends of them.
