Essence of Divinity chronicles Elaine's search for a genuine spiritual teacher and her experiences with Sathya Sai Baba. The book also describes Sai Baba's major service projects --His free educational system, from elementary school to the university level, His education in human values program, and His free health-care programs, which include hospitals performing the latest heart surgeries, and His project to bring water to the people of the Indian State of Andhra Pradesh and later to other areas.

Elaine weaves together in a compelling way what Sai Baba has said over the years on a number of important issues: health, science and spirituality, the environment, the role of women, and Vedanta.
