Paula becomes obsessed with the diaries, and with Guinevere's fledgling romance with the suave and debonair David—a man of mystery, who chooses to disclose as little about himself as possible to the woman he claims he fell in love with at first sight. David pays the ultimate price for his secrecy, however, when Guinevere marries another. John Travis though, is not who he appears to be. His gentlemanly manner disappears after the wedding, and in its stead emerges a sadistic, cruel side that his young wife has never seen before. Guinevere, and consequently Paula, suffers the man's abuse because it is "what a woman must do," but she will always long for the gentle and kind David, a man who vows never to give up hope that he and Guinevere will one day be together.
