In the first in a series of books published under the banner 'The Adventures of Bruce Trail Enviro P.I.', Bruce meets Dylan,8, and his sister, Sarah, almost 7, in their favorite park. The kids have dropped their lunch litter on the ground and dashed off to play when they see Bruce. Dylan and Sarah realize they should have put their trash in the can, but Bruce decides to give them an experience they won't soon forget.
Bruce takes Dylan and Sarah, along with Bruce's two beaver pals, Spike and Bucky, on a trip into the future. Using his Super OGEE laptop computer, they all take an amazing trip to the very same park one year later - only by now, no one has put their trash in the can for a whole year! There is so much litter they can't see the grass and they can't even move. Dylan and Sarah are shocked and amazed at what has happened to their favorite park and they tell Bruce they want their park back the way they like it. Bruce gets the kids to pledge that they will never drop their trash on the ground again and, just as fast as they got to the park, they are standing back in the park.
Bruce happily invites Dylan and Sarah to become Members of his 'Friends of Bruce' Team, joining thousands of boys and girls around the world who have pledged to follow the '3-R's' - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - every day.
Dylan and Sarah are so excited as they join Bruce, Spike and Bucky for some juice and pine nuts sitting under a shady tree. Then Spike and Bucky lead the kids in a rousing sing-a-long of one of Bruce's favorite songs, "It Just Takes A Hand To Put The Trash In The Can".
