The extraordinary collection of memoirs that follows is almost certainly unique in the millennia-long literature of war. First-hand accounts of combat from the perspective of the spear-carrier, bowman or rifleman have come down to us in barely a trickle from ancient Greece and Rome to the present day.... There were 1174 men from the 42nd Rainbow Division captured by the Germans in WWII, and in WWI 122. (We are fortunate to have two stories from WWI Rainbow ex-POWs.)
