Practicing occupational safety is not rocket science, and quite frankly, all those who present it as such do not really help people work more safely. Our goal in writing this book was to provide you with some common-sense guidelines and examples, so that you can successfully transform your safety culture. What we DO NOT intend to do is as important as what we DO intend. We do not intend to teach you safety rules and regulations. We do not include the history, detailed theories, or evolution of occupational safety and health. We will not regurgitate tables of statistics that are irrelevant to you and your goal of transformation. Those things cannot transform your safety culture. If they could, they already would have. What will happen if you successfully implement the seven principles we describe in this book is a marked improvement in the safety culture in which you work. That change will be a 180° turn. In fact, most of the organizations, teams, divisions, and people with whom we have consulted over the years made a 180 change by simply focusing on one or two of the principles.
