Description
New Testament Greek: A Whole Language Approach is not primarily a descriptive or reference grammar. It is a textbook. It takes the reader (student) into the text of the New Testament directly, right after learning the alphabet and sounds. Starting with sentences of the simplest kind, it systematically and methodically takes you on a journey working through New Testament Greek of gradually increasing complexity. Very early you are being guided to translate entire Bible verses on your own. Organized into 39 lessons, the book gives you a close to immersion experience in the language and idiom of the New Testament, with the principal goal of training to read, understand, and interpret the text. In this approach, and the way it is done, the book is without a peer. Each lesson begins with guided reading through sentence selections for which vocabulary and grammatical help is provided in workbook format. Following this the new grammar is presented in an organized fashion. There are exercises, drills, and additional readings provided to reinforce the lessons and to extend the knowledge. Although the book is structured to work through examples inductively and then learn the grammar in the grammar section, one can study the grammar first and then take advantage of the guided reading. For those unfamiliar with grammatical and linguistic terminology, each lesson has at the very front a section that introduces grammatical concepts and terminology, illustrating facts with English examples. This is almost a book in itself. Learning a language seldom occurs without effort. This book is designed with the goal of maximum payoff for the effort put in. It aims to develop competence in the actual language of the text by presenting the forms of words, the structure of sentences, and meaning and usage, all as related parts. Learn vocabulary in context, and in doing so learn the most frequent words of the New Testament. New Testament Greek: A Whole Language Approach integrates the typical content of beginning and intermediate courses, and leaves plenty of opportunity with additional reading, drills etc., and the details presented, to go beyond them. Thoroughly tested in graduate and undergraduate classrooms over half a decade by several teachers, this book is ideal for college and seminary instruction of New Testament Greek to do exegesis, for recovering lost or forgotten knowledge through self-study, to prepare for graduate examinations on New Testament Greek, and to teach oneself the language of the New Testament. There is a detailed index and appendices of summary charts of forms with references to sections in the book. Additional audio-visual aids are available by contacting the publisher.
