People are frustrated with the lack of civility in America, with politicians currently holding the lead in negative examples of interpersonal relationships. However, the most pervasive forms of organization in our society – corporations – are places where incivility can breed and grow. Being Civil defines what civility is – “those actions and behaviors that support the dignity of another. Being Civil starts with the root individualism that is a defining characteristic of American culture – then expands on civil concepts such as dignity and respect. The exchange of civility is analogized to that of the market exchange of goods and services, with changes in personal balance sheet of self-esteem and dignity being sensitive to both civil and uncivil actions and behaviors of others. Recommended behavior and actions (not rules) are offered for consideration by corporate leaders and employees as way to boost profits by reducing employee turnover, enhancing productivity and boosting customer service through civil practice.
