About the book

--- Objective---

As an avid teacher, I am constantly identifying student training needs for the SAT exam, evaluating effectiveness of resources, and developing strategies and tools. I believe that having a good book is the first step toward success! This is a comprehensive yet concise ready-to-use book for students to do a self-study or for teachers to run a SAT math class.

The unique strengths of this book:

1. During math review, no student wants to be overloaded with too much text reading. Rather, he or she wants to learn how to solve problems as quickly as possible, with clear directions. Therefore, I base my book on Teaching through Examples, which is a quick and clear way of learning.

2. Instead of focusing too much on strategies that teach guessing and eliminating and only lightly touch upon problem-solving skills, I focus on teaching important and foundational math skills that give students confidence in solving problems and answering correctly.

3. “Practice makes perfect,” is crucial to math review, hence the well thought-out structure and exhaustive practices and solutions in every chapter. The best strategies to solve problems are also taught and demonstrated in the lessons and practice solutions.

A wise proverb says, “I see, I remember; I do, I understand.”

The objective of this book is to see through examples and remember, do through practice and understand.

--- Content ---

This book divides step-by-step reviews into four main units: Arithmetic Operations, Algebra, Statistics and Probability and Geometry in accordance with the standards of SAT math. Each unit contains many chapters that teach new skills for solving typical SAT questions. The five practice tests familiarize students with the SAT testing format. The book also places a greater emphasis on helping students strengthen their problem-solving skills. Very little text reading is required, as the relevant examples work as the fundamental teaching tool. The practice drills with solutions and sample tests make the learning internalized and complete.

---How to use this book---

This book can be used for students who wish to pursue a distinctive math score on the SAT test, or for those who need only a quick review in order to aim for a better score on the test. The book also makes an excellent fundamental math reference book for students to take to college.

1. For those who seek a distinctive score: I suggest that you make a schedule to go through the whole book in order; study all the examples in each chapter and practice all the problems, and learn more from the solutions to ensure that you have mastered the problem-solving skills taught in that chapter. Move on to the next chapter when you know the current chapter thoroughly; you may repeat the practices for reinforcement. When completed all four units, proceed to all the practice tests and study the solutions to make sure you have mastered the skills presented. This thorough study will build up your math strength and give you a greater confidence to excel on the test.

2. For those who use it as a quick review: I suggest that students start with the unit in which you feel the weakest, e.g. Algebra, and go through all the examples in every chapter of that unit to make sure you learn the problem-solving skills taught there. If you are still unsure about a particular concept, practice some problems from that chapter and look at the solutions to be certain that you know how to solve those kinds of problems. It is very important to do all the practice tests at the end. When you have done such a review, your math skills will be stronger and you will have gained increased readiness for the test.

The best strategy for performing well is to prepare well. The purpose of this book is to help you learn and become well prepared. I pray that you will be blessed in understanding and mastering the knowledge through this book and have great success on your SAT test.
