One minute your life is right where you left it, like your keys or your glasses. The next, there’s an explosion and you’re standing there looking at thousands of tiny pieces of your life in a pile all around you. There’s a moment of blank space where you think nothing, nothing at all, and then suddenly a horrible, sickening thought comes to you - this can’t be fixed. It’s like shattering your granny’s favourite vase or realising too late you left your wallet on the subway. The life you had, the one you liked or hated or took for granted, it’s gone and it’s not coming back and now you have to go out and find a new one. What happened to me isn’t anything that doesn’t happen to thousands of people, every day. I remind myself of that but to be honest, it doesn’t always help.
