Excerpt: ... case in new york. A case happened in a city in New York State in which a gentleman went to a dentist to have a tooth extracted, and the dentist used a local anaesthetic. He did not employ hypnotism at all; but the anaesthetic, being entirely new to the patient, he got thinking over the matter afterward, and imagined that hypnotism had been used on him unconsciously as he was ignorant of any anaesthetic other than chloroform and ether, and as no inhaler was employed he naturally inferred that he had been hypnotized, as he had read a number of sensational articles in which people had been hypnotized unconsciously (one in particular in which it was represented that a dentist had hypnotized a young lady one time and caused her to elope with him). After he had the tooth pulled, every day at 10 o'clock he would come to the dentist's office claiming that he was acting under the influence of hypnotism, that the dentist had placed a spell over him of some kind. This was continued for over a month when he brought a suit for damages against the dentist. In the trial it was shown that the dentist had no knowledge of hypnotism whatever, so the case was dismissed and the patient got rid of his hallucination. It would have been utterly impossible for the dentist to have placed the spell over him even if he had desired to do so; here again hypnotism got the credit for being a very dangerous thing.
