A handsome peristyle of 10 columns occupies the whole width of the building, the portico supporting on three sides a covered terrace. In the atrium are an impluvium in marble, and a handsome marble table with a lustral basin beneath. Near this is a marble counter in which are built nine earthen jars: on the wall of the room behind is scratched the first line of the JEneid--Alma Vilumque cano Tlo--r being replaced by /. KOUTE 6. CASTELLAMMARE TO SORRENTO.--CARRIAGE ROAD. Carriages at the stat. or in the town, 2 horses, 6 frs., 1 horse, 3 frs., with a fr. to the driver. The road from Castellammare to (11 m.) Sorrento is one of the finest drives in this beautiful region. It is carried boldly along the cliffs which in many places rise perpendicularly from the sea, and, like the mountains behind, are of limestone, which forms the fundamental rock on the side of the Bay of Naples. The old mule-track over the heights is rough, but affords even grander views. It mounts the cliffs behind the church of Pozzano, and descends to Meta in 3 hrs. On leaving Castellammare the road passes below the Convent of Pozzano, and traverses the headland of Capo d'Orlando. In the sea at its base rise numerous mineral springs, emitting a most fetid odour of sulphuretted hydrogen gas. 4 m. Vico and Equa, two towns separated by a deep ravine, form one united comune under the name of Vico Equense (11,208), recalling the Vicus jEquanus of the Romans.
