On a fine warm morning in September, 1826, I was seated in one of the shadiest recesses of those lovely woodlands which skirt Plombieres, on the side near the Stanislas Fountain. I had a book in my hand, but I was not reading: my thoughts were dreamingly wandering back to a glorious period of the past.
