Description

Excerpt from Letters From Professor Thomas J. Mulvany, R. H. A : To His Eldest Son William T. Mulvany Esqure, Royal Commissioner of Public Works Ireland, From 1825-1845; And Appendix Containing Correspondence With Sir Thomas Lawrence and Obituaries

My Grandfather Thomas J. Mulvany and his brother John lost their Father in early childhood and were brought up by a Roman Catholic Bishop (the one mentioned in the third letter of 11 Dec. 1826). They both became artists, my Grandfather was made a professor, he was a very popular man and charming in conversation.

His Epitaph in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin was as follows:

Thomas J. Mulvany
Member of the Royal Hibernian Academy
died Feb. 27th aged 65 years.

An eye quick to perceive a tongue eloquent to proclaim
A hand skilled to delineate the beauties of God's wonderful Creation,
Lie mouldering here.
A heart that throbbed but for its fellow, beats no more
The soul of genius is gone to thy God whom it adored
It's memory
Cherished by a sorrowing family
Lives in the hearts of
Surviving friends.
