The first edition of this work having been a long tome out of print, the Publisher requested me to prepare a second. This I consented to do, because an undertaking so congenial in all its aspects, afforded me opportunity to improve the narrative, and to lay before the reader a considerable number of valuable documents which have lately come to light.
Of the relevance and importance of such additions it is hardly necessary to say a word, since it is now universally admitted that original evidences are an indispensable element of historical composition.
Centuries ago, when criticism seldom questioned or animadverted, chronicles, however inelegant in structure, or meagre in details, satisfied the purposes of inquiry; but in our time no narrative will be accepted that does not reveal facts, as well as the laws by which they were governed. Conscious of this, I have allowed the chief actors in the events which the work records, to speak for themselves, through their correspondence and the other agencies they employed to promote their respective aims.
