Incidents of travel in Yucatan

Originally published in 1843, this volume shares John L. Stephens’ account of exploring newly discovered Mayan ruins, accompanied by the lithographs of his travel companion, Frederick Catherwood. Stephens describes Yucatan villages of 150 years ago and reveals his groundbreaking theory that indigenous peoples built the great Mayan pyramids and temples, not Egyptians or Greeks as was commonly assumed at the time.
