Thomas Otway (1652-1685) was an English dramatist of the Restoration period. In 1675 Thomas Betterton produced Otway s first play, Alcibiades, which was printed in the same year. Early in 1680 the first of Otway s two tragic masterpieces, The Orphan; or, The Unhappy Marriage, was produced at the Dorset Garden. In 1680, he also published The Poets Complaint of his Muse; or, A Satyr against Libells. Amongst his other works are Don Carlos (1676), Titus and Berenice (1677), The Cheats of Scapin (1677), Friendship in Fashion (1678), The Soldier s Fortune (1681), Venice Preserved: A Tragedy in Five Acts (1681) and The Atheist (1684).
