Description

Charles Fayette McGlashan (1847- 1931) was born in Wisconsin. He attended Sotoyme Institute, Healdsburg, California, from 1861 to 1865 and Williston Seminary in Massachusetts, 1868-1870. In 1878 a subscription to the Republican from a survivor of the Donner Party led to McGlashan's writing several articles on the subject. In 1879 History of the Donner Party: A Tragedy of the Sierra was published. The Donner Party was a group of California-bound American emigrants caught up in the "westering fever" of the 1840s. After becoming snowbound in the Sierra Nevada in the winter of 1846-1847, some of them resorted to cannibalism.
