Description
Jacob’s Pal is the life story of Abraham Lincoln and his fictional best friend. Jacob is a conniving, self-centered individual who takes advantage of his friendship with the more successful Lincoln at every opportunity. In their childhood the two are quite close, but adult ambition soon begins to separate them. Jacob is the catalytic and youthful Huckleberry Finn to Lincoln’s more benign Tom Sawyer. Lincoln is full of aspirations from his earliest days, while Jacob, other than hedonistic self-indulgence, simply has little inner drive. Jacob is the kind of person who merely wants to live life one day at a time, with little thought or preparation for the future. He is content to remain uneducated and crass, whereas Lincoln recognizes that if he is to ever escape his humble beginnings and realize his lofty dreams, he must educate himself, promote his own skills, and work constantly at attaining his goals.
