The book provides a lively, informal history of a Russian children's shelter that the author, an American child psychologist, visited annually over a period of nine years. It evolved from a small, warm institution to a large, elaborate one. The author speculates on the advantages and disadvantages of size versus intimacy. The book is written in both English and Russian. It includes beautiful photographs of the children.
