Finnish soldiers on skis annihilated two tank divisions, humiliating the Russians. Charles Minot (Minnie) Dole, the president of the National Ski Patrol, saw this as an example of why the Army needed mountain troops and successfully lobbied General George C. Marshall. The 10th Mountain Division came into being July 1943 at Camp Hale, Colorado.
