Islam, Law, and Human Rights (World of Islam)

In the United States and other Western societies, a consensus about basic human rights has developed over time. In countries where Islam is the majority religion, however, human rights are defined differently. In Muslim majority states, Islam prescribes both secular and religious duties through Islamic law, called Sharia. This book examines the way in which Muslim states have applied Sharia within their governments and compares the ways that Western and Muslim governments deal with human rights.
