Hollins University Students Tell It Like It Is
It's good to be a chick at Hollins, mainly because its undergraduate program is all female. But it's also good because many of the women who graduate from Hollins go on to bigger, better things. Known for its writing program, Hollins' creative writing alumna Anne Dillard and Natasha Trethewey have both won Pulitzer Prizes. Supposedly, the program has produced more published writers than any other college of its size in the United States. Not too shabby.
In terms of academics, Hollins uses its own kind of education and curriculum. Rather than focusing on the usual core subjects like Math, Science, English, and History, it requires each student to take a variety of classes to teach them skills (such as Writing and Oral Communication) and perspectives (such as Aesthetic Analysis and Creative Expression). The goal here is for students to explore other fields of study while rounding out their basic comprehension of the world.
"Everyone cares about how we can better the academic programs. Professors are always eager for your input. They take it very seriously."
"The best part is that all the teachers love what they teach, and therefore, the classes are more interesting. There is genuine excitement about education at Hollins."
How about it ladies? Can you still find eligible men in town or nearby?
"We are close to VMI, so you can always go there and find you a man in uniform."
"I have my boyfriend at Washington & Lee, and that's the way I like it. I see him often enough, but I can concentrate on my work while I'm on campus."
What are the women on campus like?
"There is a mix of different types of people. The students range from artsy to gothic to the sorority type. People are very into coming up with their own style at Hollins."
Visiting campus isn't enough.
