The Sound of Applause

The Sound of Applause chronicles and compares medieval and modern outdoor entertainment forms with a focus on the period of 1930-1960, including the Great Depression, the Federal Theatre, segregation, the Black Codes, carnivals, and Cuban dictators Batista and Castro.

While exploring how United States politics impacted employment choices for African-American and Cuban performing artists, the book simultaneously reveals important works rendered by three African-American showmen. Applause continues through the 21st century and pays homage to major accomplishments of African-American, Latino, and Hispanic thespians. A lesson plan follows each chapter, and the epilogue spotlights President Obama and First Lady Michelle.
