New York State Government and Politics in a Nutshell: A Citizen's Primer was written to help New York State residents understand the important role the state plays in our nation, how the state government works, and how citizens can participate. A center for finance, commerce, and communication, the state's population is skewed, with four out of ten New Yorkers living in New York City, a cleavage that often results in an upstate/downstate rivalry for state funding. Today the state's largest problems are high government spending and taxes. Resolving these issues and jumpstarting the state's economy are central political issues for all residents.
