Why is there an 8-hour service window when the repairman always shows up in the last 15 minutes? How do you get a dog to pee in a cup when the vet needs a urine sample? If you give your kid a time-out and then forget to let him out for 20 minutes, does that make you a bad parent? If you’re like some of us, these are the questions that inexplicably keep you up at night, wondering, worrying, waiting for just the right self-help book to come along and explain everything in a way that can help you cope. This isn’t it. But if you sometimes feel like everything you’re doing to make your life the best that it can be is slowly killing you, you might want to take a few moments to laugh at the absurdities of it all — marriage, family, friends, school, work, parenting, politics, pets, neighbors, holidays, etc. Because while nobody thinks these building blocks of the American Dream are a joke, they do provide life with a lot of punch lines.
