By Oliver Frazer .. 158 This is the last portrait made of Clay before he went to Cuba to seek that relief which the southern clime did not afford to him. Frazer was a personal friend of Clay and was painting this portrait for himself, when James Clay saw it on the easel and was so impressed with its faithfulness, that he took it away with him without its being finished, for fear of its losing some of its fine quality.
