Description

The work is based on a series of lectures which for several years past I have offered in courses on economic geology at the University of Minnesota. These lectures have been rewritten and expanded. The material was first prepared some years ago to be included as a chapter inT heP rinciples of Economic Geology, recently issued. The chapter was so large, however, that to have included it would have defeated some of the purposes of that volume. It was withdrawn and rewritten and is offered here. This book was prepared to be used as a text for students who wish to acquire some knowledge of the geology of petroleum, especially for those who have already studied the operation of geologic processes and the principles of stratigraphy. I have introduced sections showing the strata of many oil fields and many details of stratigraphy which it will be desirable to omit in classroom work. The best results will probably be obtained by omitting much of the material presented for certain fields and emphasizing that relating to other fields, especially those of which the students already have some general knowledge. Within the last few years I have had many opportunities to visit the geologic departments of petroleum engineers and corporations and have been impressed with the large amount of carefully prepared data which they possess. I can not hope to add much, if anything, to these data. Nevertheless, by offering a little about many fields I trust I have rendered a service to the profession. This volume is not intended to serve as a handbook of petroleum geology. I have included in it, however, brief sketches of the geology of many oil fields and numerous references to the literature treating them, and I hope it will serve some of the needs of a geologist who is undertaking the study of a field new to him.
