Personal Memoir - Part 2 The Author is a graduate of London University and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He is also Fellow of the IEEE and IET and has been awarded a DSc (Eng) from the University of London. He was born in Hampshire in 1930 and educated at Brockenhurst County High School and HMS Conway. After ten years as a deck officer in the Merchant Navy he joined AERE Harwell in 1957. Subsequently he obtained a degree in Physics and worked as a research scientist at Rutherford Laboratory, Oxfordshire. He was co-founder and chairman of Vector Fields Ltd in 1984 and the first President of Vector Fields Inc. in 1988. In 1992 he was elected to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences as a foreign member and also received the IEE innovation medal. In the 1993 New Year Honours he was appointed by HM Queen Elizabeth II an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) for services to science. In 1995 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Technical University of Graz, Austria.
