Called to preach, he studied at Indiana Asbury University and Boston Theological Seminary. Initially an intinerant preacher for the Methodists, after hearing William Booth preach he joined the Salvation Army and trained with them in London, England. On his return to the United States, Brengle's gifts as a preacher won him widespread recognition. He wrote HELPS TO HOLINESS while recovering from an injury sustained during his ministry in Boston. Brengle's leadership skills led to his being appointed Commissioner of the Salvation Army.
