Twilight New Moon

Sometime in the night I slipped from sleep back into consciousness. I wondered what time it was; the steet lamp still intruded from the alley. Black and gray scudding clouds were visible and the moon was full. Snowflakes drifted down through the light and sparkled so lazily they couldn't amount to much. John had rolled toward me and I studied the heavy hair on his face. Apparently he had stayed awake long enough to retract his fangs. The hair made him look so different. When I saw him this way I could believe he went as far back as Egypt--if only the kids at school could see him now. After a few moments in which I studied John I felt a twinge in my bladder. That must be what had waked me in the first place. I lay there, too comfortable to move immediately and soon I saw the slightest pink finger creep upward across the gray clouds. The twinge in my bladder became a prodding and a priority and I slid from bed pulling on top and jeans. I padded barefoot into the hallway.
