The student is taught how to take off Quantities in a meaningful manner in accordance with the Uniform Method of Measurement of Construction Work (Revised 2010). Volume 2 consists of five Courses, each course comprising of eight detailed Studies, addressing a variety of construction design and contractual conditions. Each Study refers to a detailed Quantity take off which is critically studied discussing rules of measurement that have been, or should have been applied. Also comments on the layout of the dimension sheets, the clarity of information therein, and the estimator's interpretation of the design documents. Although the purpose of Quantities is to address the measurement of construction work according to design documents, it also stresses the importance of measuring in a format that provides future valuable economic information for planning, design analysis, design economics, and cost control. A building can be built a hundred different ways, and yet appear similar. There are numerous choices in the solution of design components and systems which may be satisfactory. However the cost of construction and cost of ownership (operation and maintenance) can differ enormously. Biography: Author has practised Construction Cost Planning, Design Economics, and Cost Management in Africa, Canada, and the USA over the past fifty years. The purpose of his work to encourage sound economic planning whereby the property owner can make responsible financial and contractual commitments at the correct time.
